I’m more auxiliary support jumping around to set up, help projects that are behind, doing harder abnormal tasks, run technical support/troubleshooting, and training new architects on the software. Today where I work it’s 1 draftsman (me) and 6 designers. I was assigned projects and worked one-on-one with designers through out the life of the project. My first job we had about 3 draftsmen to 4 designers. However less and less draftsmen are needed as the software becomes easy enough for the engineers/architects to do the work themselves. I don’t think we are being replace by AI as some have feared for years. If you are ok with that then drafting is a good career particularly coming out of school.Īlso keep in mind that the profession as a whole is downsizing. As a Draftsman with experience I might recommend something to the Architect, I definitely look out for their errors, and I’m proud to be part of a team that designs. That’s an important distinction, because if it’s the home DESIGN you like then you might look into more education to become an Architect. The Architects and the Engineers do the design.
